The commander's title, repeated word for word verbal / quotation — confirmed

The phrase that opens this unit — אַבְנֵר בֶּן־נֵר שַׂר־צָבָא, Abner son of Ner, commander of the host — is not composed here. It is lifted from the roster of Saul's court in 1 Samuel 14:50-51, and Ellicott, JFB, Gill and Cambridge all send the reader back to that passage for Abner's identity as Saul's first cousin. The Verifier confirms the lexical overlap, including the genuinely rare Nêr. ⚙ The force of the repetition is that Abner enters 2 Samuel wearing exactly the credential he wore under Saul, and no other: the narrator introduces him with a court title from a court that no longer exists. The same cluster recurs at 1 Samuel 26:5, where Abner is asleep beside Saul while David spares the king's life.

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexemes H5369 Nêr (rare — in 16 vv), H74 ʼAbnêr (in 53 vv), H8269 sar (in 368 vv). The rarity of H5369 plus the fixed word order makes this a repeated title-formula, not a coincidence of common vocabulary. No prophetic quotation is claimed — this is the narrator reusing his own phrase.

Mahanaim: the camp of God and the camp of the rival king structural / thematic — confirmed

Abner crowns his king at מַחֲנָיִם, a rare place name (13 verses) meaning two camps. The Verifier ties this unit to Joshua 21:38 and 1 Chronicles 6:80, where Mahanaim appears with Gilead in the Levitical city lists — Ellicott and Pulpit both make the Levitical status part of the town's suitability. Its older association is Jacob's: Cambridge quotes it as “the spot consecrated by the presence of God in primeval times, where Jacob had divided his people into two hosts.” Barnes, JFB and K&D name Genesis 32:2 here as well. ⚙ The motif runs forward too: 2 Samuel 2:29 has Abner retreating to Mahanaim after Gibeon, and Ellicott notes that David himself will shelter there when he flees Absalom (2 Samuel 17:24). One town is the refuge of Jacob, of Ish-bosheth, and finally of David.

Genesis 32:2 is NOT in the Verifier's computed candidate list and is included on the named authority of Ellicott, Barnes, JFB, Cambridge and K&D, who all cite it — a commentator-attested link, not a machine-verified lexeme match. No quotation claimed.

The Ashurite: two verses, and no agreement flagged — verify source

הָאֲשׁוּרִי (H805) is one of the rarest lexemes in the canon: the Verifier finds it in two verses only, this one and Genesis 25:3, where the Assurim are listed among the sons of Dedan. ⚙ That is a real and striking lexical coincidence, and we flag rather than claim it, because the authority we trust most on this word rules the connection out. K&D: the reading is “decidedly faulty, since we can no more suppose it to refer to Assyria (Asshur) than to the Arabian tribe of the Assurim (Genesis 25:3); but the true name cannot be discovered.” The versions do not agree either — Targum reads Asher (so Ellicott, Poole, Benson, Gill), Vulgate and Syriac read Geshur (Cambridge), LXX has Thasiri or Thasour (K&D), and Pulpit thinks the original name was simply miscopied. The thread is recorded as a textual problem, not as a canonical resonance.

Genesis 25:3

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexeme H805 ʼĂshûwrîy, in 2 vv only — the rarest link in this unit. Flagged because provenance is contested at both ends: K&D expressly deny that the Genesis 25:3 Assurim are meant and call the reading here corrupt, and the versions disagree (Targum: Asher; Vulgate/Syriac: Geshur; LXX: Thasiri). The lexeme match is real; the identification behind it is not established.

The man of shame: a name that runs only through this war structural / thematic — confirmed

אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת (H378) stands in ten verses of the entire canon, and every one the Verifier surfaces falls inside the war between the houses. The Verifier links this unit to 2 Samuel 3:8, 3:14-15, 4:5, 4:8 and 4:12 — Abner's quarrel with him over Rizpah, the demand for Michal, his murder in his bed, and the execution of his murderers. ⚙ The name is itself an interpretation: Cambridge holds that Esh-baal was changed to Ish-bosheth “to avoid the scandal of pronouncing the name of the false god Baal,” while Ellicott records a second possibility, that the compound with Baal was the later name, “given in view of their opposition to the divinely appointed king, and to mark God's utter rejection of the house of Saul.” Pulpit insists that at this early date baal simply meant lord, and that Ishbaal originally “had no discreditable meaning.” Whichever account is right, the canon now calls him only by the shame-name, and only within this doomed reign.

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexeme H378 ʼÎysh-Bôsheth (rare — in 10 vv) at every listed reference, with H74 ʼAbnêr and H7586 Shâʼûwl alongside. Deliberately NOT tiered verbal: the shared lexeme is a proper name recurring inside a single continuous narrative, which is lexical recurrence rather than quotation. The motif claim — that the name marks the whole arc — is ours.

The anointed one his own nation will not have typological

Matthew Henry reads the whole scene figurally and says so plainly: “David was herein a type of Christ, whom Israel would not submit to, though anointed of the Father to be a Prince and a Saviour to them.” ⚙ The structure Henry is pointing at is real in this unit and is carried by the text's own grammar: one king is anointed and waits, counting days in Hebron over a single house; the other is caused to reign by a commander and claims all of it. Luke 19:14 puts the refusal into the citizens' own mouths, and John 1:11 states it as a summary of the ministry. We do not claim more than a pattern here.

basis: Cross-Testament Greek↔Hebrew: no shared Strong's numbers are possible between these texts, so no verbal tier can be claimed and the Verifier offers no basis. The figural reading is Matthew Henry's, stated in his note on 2:8-17; it is a widely-held line in Christian reading of the David narratives, but it rests on pattern, not on citation. Our contribution is only the observation that the unit's own grammar (Hifil kingmaking against a counted, waiting reign) carries the pattern.

The Prince Israel would not have ancient/widely-held

Henry states the reading and we follow it: “David was herein a type of Christ, whom Israel would not submit to, though anointed of the Father to be a Prince and a Saviour to them.” The shape is exact. In 2:4 Judah anoints David; in 2:8-9 the nation is given a different king by the man who holds the army; in 2:10 the house of Judah alone is found at his back. ⚙ The apostolic preaching uses the same two words Henry uses — Acts 5:31 names the risen Christ Prince and Saviour — and Acts 13:21-23 runs the sequence Saul, David, and “of this man's seed hath God raised unto Israel a Saviour,” which is the very succession this unit is standing in the middle of. Luke 19:14 supplies the refusal in direct speech: we will not have this man to reign over us. This is the long-standing Christian reading of the David narratives, and Henry records it here.

A throne received, not seized novel

JFB observe of David in this unit that he “was content to wait God's time and studiously avoided any collision with the rival king.” Gill makes the same point from the other side, that David was “still and quiet, and not opposing him, waiting God's own time,” and holds that his oath to Saul (1 Samuel 24:21) bound him. ⚙ Set against Abner, who causes a man to reign by force of office, this is the unit's sharpest contrast, and the New Testament presses exactly that contrast in the temptation: the kingdoms of the world are offered to Christ as a thing that can be handed over by one who holds present power, and refused. Philippians 2:8-9 states the pattern as doctrine — the name above every name is given, and given after obedience to death. ⚙ We mark this as our own construction: neither JFB nor Gill draws the line to Matthew 4 or Philippians 2, and the connection is thematic, not verbal.

Seven years and six new moons: the kingdom not yet whole novel

2:11 is the only thing this unit says David actually did: he was king in Hebron over the house of Judah, and the days were numbered. Gill immediately adds the thirty-three years to come, so that the reign “is usually called forty years” — the summary reads the partial reign in the light of the whole one. ⚙ Hebrews 2:8-9 makes the same move about Christ: all things have been put under his feet, but now we see not yet all things put under him — and yet we see Jesus crowned. The structural parallel is that in both cases the kingdom is real, legally established, and geographically small, and the count of days is the measure of a delay, not of a defeat. ⚙ We mark this novel: it is our reading of the numerical summary, not a link any of our commentators draws, and it should not be pressed further than a pattern.
