The verb that marks out the three hundred, יָלֹק / הַמֲלַקְקִים (lâqaq, H3952), is rare — five verses in the whole Hebrew canon — and the Verifier's other principal sites are both in the Ahab cycle, where dogs lap royal blood: the word against Naboth's murderer at 1 Kings 21:19, and its fulfilment at the pool of Samaria in 1 Kings 22:38. Both those verses also carry כֶּלֶב (keleb, H3611), the very noun of the simile here. ⚙ The Study Bible records the lexical fact and stops short of a claim about intent: there is no evidence the Judges narrator was pointing forward to Ahab. What the shared vocabulary does establish is the register. Hebrew had ordinary words for drinking — שָׁתָה (H8354) stands twice in this very unit — and the narrator did not use one. ✦ Gill keeps the comparison narrow: "the likeness between the drinking of these men, to be observed lay not in anything else but in the single action of lapping."

1 Kings 21:19 · 1 Kings 22:38

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexemes H3952 lâqaq (rare — in 5 vv canon-wide) and H3611 keleb (in 31 vv) across Judges 7:5 and 1 Kings 21:19 / 22:38. The rare lexeme establishes a genuine verbal link; it is NOT a quotation, and no literary dependence is claimed in either direction.

The hill of the teacher — מוֹרֶה in three verses verbal / quotation — confirmed

מוֹרֶה (Môwreh, H4176) occurs in only three verses of the Hebrew Bible: the oak of Moreh at Shechem where the LORD first appeared to Abram and promised the land (Genesis 12:6), the same site in the blessing-and-curse instruction of Deuteronomy 11:30, and this hill above the valley of Jezreel. ✦ Ellicott raises the geographical difficulty himself — "that is twenty-five miles south of Mount Gilboa" — and concludes with ✦ Barnes, ✦ Cambridge and ✦ K&D that this Moreh is Little Hermon, Jebel ed-Duhy, a different place bearing the same name. ⚙ So the link is lexical, not geographical, and the Study Bible tiers it accordingly. ✦ Cambridge glosses the noun itself: "The hill of the môreh means the hill of the teacher ; it was the seat of a holy place where divine teaching was given"; ✦ Ellicott prefers "archer." ⚙ The machine notes, without pressing it, that a rare name meaning teacher marks both the place where God first taught Abram what the land would be, and the place where Midian pitched its camp on the night God taught Israel who saves.

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexeme H4176 Môwreh (rare — in 3 vv canon-wide, all three cited here), plus H4725 mâqôwm (in 379 vv) with Genesis 12:6. A rare-lexeme verbal link only; the commentators (Ellicott, Barnes, Cambridge, K&D) agree the two sites are geographically distinct.

Whosoever is fearful — the proclamation of Deuteronomy 20:8 structural / thematic — confirmed

The first sifting is not an innovation but the execution of a standing law. ✦ Ellicott: the proclamation "is in exact accordance with Deuteronomy 20:8 (and the other general directions in that chapter)." ✦ JFB: "This proclamation was in terms of an established law (De 20:8)." ✦ Barnes, ✦ Gill and ✦ K&D concur, and ✦ K&D distinguishes the law's own purpose from its use here: "its general object was to fortify the spirit of the army be removing the cowardly and desponding. But in the case before us the intention of the Lord was to deprive His people of all ground for self-glorification." ✦ Cambridge is more cautious, saying only that the sentence "closely resembles Deuteronomy 20:8 , and may allude to the ordinance there laid down," and treats the allusion as evidence of a late hand. ⚙ The Study Bible notes that Judges 7:3 and Deuteronomy 20:8 do not share a distinctive rare lexeme in the Verifier's output; the recorded basis here is the near-unanimous commentary attestation plus the shared legal form, which is why this badge is tiered structural rather than verbal.

Deuteronomy 20:8

Mine own hand hath saved me — the warning of Deuteronomy 8 structural / thematic — confirmed

The boast God forestalls in v. 2 is the boast Moses had already named as Israel's characteristic temptation in the good land: "lest thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth" (Deuteronomy 8:17). ✦ Ellicott sends the reader straight there — "Lest Israel vaunt themselves. —See Deuteronomy 8:17" — and ✦ Cambridge widens it: "For the thought cf. Deuteronomy 8:11-17 ; Deuteronomy 9:4 f." ✦ Pulpit adds Psalm 44:3-8, where Israel confesses that "they got not the land in possession by their own sword." ⚙ The link is one of motif and of the shared figure of the hand (יָד, H3027) as agency, not of distinctive shared vocabulary; the Study Bible tiers it structural on that basis, and notes that the strength of the link is that Judges 7 dramatizes what Deuteronomy 8 merely forbids.

Deuteronomy 8:17 · Psalm 44:3

basis: Not a Verifier rare-lexeme match — the common term H3027 yâd (a hand) is far too frequent to carry a verbal claim. Recorded basis: shared motif of the self-crediting hand, attested by Ellicott (Deut 8:17), Cambridge (Deut 8:11-17; 9:4f) and Pulpit (Ps 44:3-8).

That no flesh should glory — Gideon's arithmetic in Paul and Jonathan structural / thematic — confirmed

✦ Cambridge points this passage forward: "The army is to be reduced in order that Jehovah's intervention on behalf of Israel may be the more striking and all the glory His; cf. 1 Samuel 14:6 , Psalm 44:3 , 1 Corinthians 1:25-27 ." ✦ Pulpit reaches for the same Jonathan text: "There is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6). ✦ Maclaren makes the New Testament connection explicitly, saying that Paul "gives the same reason as our lesson does, 'that no flesh should glory in His presence.'" ⚙ The Study Bible marks the necessary limit: the 1 Corinthians link is cross-Testament, Greek against Hebrew, and therefore cannot be built on shared Strong's numbers at all — no Greek lexeme in 1 Corinthians 1 can be "the same word" as יִתְפָּאֵר (H6286). What is shared is a stated logic, and it is stated in both places in nearly identical terms: the instrument is made small so the glory cannot be misassigned.

The 1 Samuel 14:6 leg is Hebrew↔Hebrew but rests on motif, not on a rare shared lexeme.

The trembling that names a place — חָרֵד at Shiloh and at Harod structural / thematic — confirmed

חָרֵד (chârêd, H2730) is rare — six verses — and the Verifier surfaces 1 Samuel 4:13, where Eli sits by the way watching, "for his heart trembled for the ark of God." ⚙ The Study Bible records the shared adjective and the shared situation: in both places the trembling is over the visible absence of God's power from Israel's field, and in both places a spring or a seat by the way becomes the vantage from which the outcome is awaited. ✦ Ellicott adds two further sites for the place-name: the same fountain is "obviously alluded to in 1Samuel 29:1," and there may be a further allusion to the trembling at 1 Samuel 28:5, where Saul, camped in this same plain, sees the Philistine host "and his heart greatly trembled." ⚙ That last link is the sharpest: the same valley, the same dread, and a king who — unlike Gideon — had no word from God at all.

basis: Verifier: shared Hebrew lexeme H2730 chârêd (rare — in 6 vv) with 1 Samuel 4:13. Tiered structural rather than verbal because the link asserted here is a shared motif (dread in the face of the enemy at a named place), not dependence; the 1 Sam 28:5 and 29:1 legs rest on Ellicott's topographical identification, which he states as probable, not certain.

En-dor on the northern spur — a psalm citation the sources give two ways flagged — verify source

✦ Cambridge, locating the hill of Moreh, writes: "En-dor (now 'En-dûr), the home of the woman that had a familiar spirit, lay on the northern spur of the hill; cf. Psalm 83:10." ✦ Ellicott, treating the same geography, reports a variant reading of the place in Judges 7:1 itself — "There is another reading, 'Endor' (comp. Ps. 82:10)" — citing a different psalm number. ⚙ The Study Bible flags this rather than silently harmonizing it. The psalm that names Midian, Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah and Zalmunna and speaks of those "destroyed at En-dor" is Psalm 83 in the Hebrew numbering; Ellicott's "82" is either a versification difference or a printer's slip, and the underlying textual variant "Endor" for the reading of Judges 7:1 is itself reported by Ellicott alone among the twelve voices in the brief. The link between Gideon's battlefield and Psalm 83 is worth pursuing; the provenance of both the citation and the variant needs checking against the sources before it is relied on.

Psalm 83:10

basis: Contested provenance on two counts: (1) the two commentators cite different psalm numbers for the same En-dor reference (Cambridge 'Psalm 83:10', Ellicott 'Ps. 82:10'); (2) Ellicott's reported variant reading 'Endor' at Judges 7:1 is unattested by the other eleven voices in the brief, and the Verifier returns no lexeme basis for this pair. Verify against the critical apparatus before use.

I will save you — the root that becomes a name ancient/widely-held

The verb at the centre of this unit is יָשַׁע (yâshaʻ, H3467), whose primary sense is to be open, wide, free — to bring a man out of a narrow place. It appears twice, and the two occurrences are the whole argument: in v. 2 it is in the mouth of a boaster, third person, with a human hand as subject — "my own hand has saved me"; in v. 7 it is in the mouth of God, Hifil imperfect, first person singular — "I will save you." Between them stand thirty-one thousand seven hundred dismissed men. ⚙ This is the root from which Israel's two great salvation-names are formed: Yᵉhôshûaʻ, and the name given by the angel at Matthew 1:21 — "thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." The pattern God enforces at Harod is the pattern that name assumes: the saving is done by one hand, and it is not Israel's. ✦ JFB reads Gideon's answering faith through Hebrews 11:32, where he is named among those "who through faith subdued kingdoms." ⚙ The machine offers the lexical observation as sourced and the redemptive-historical reading as its own, fallible, and open to correction.

Too many for Me — the reduction that ends at one ancient/widely-held

God's stated objection is not that Israel is weak but that Israel is numerous enough to take credit. ✦ Poole: the design is "so to deliver Israel, that it may appear to be my own miraculous act." ✦ Geneva: "God will not that any creature deprive him of his glory." ✦ K&D: the intention was "to deprive His people of all ground for self-glorification." ✦ Maclaren sees the motion running through the whole canon: "The same sort of procedure, and for the same reason, runs through all God's dealings," and he takes it to Paul's boast in the foolish and the weak. ⚙ The Study Bible reads the reduction as a line with a terminus. Thirty-two thousand is too many; ten thousand is still too many; three hundred is enough — and the logic does not stop at three hundred. It runs on to a night when the disciples all forsook Him and fled, and the deliverance of the people was accomplished by exactly one man, alone, unarmed, outside a city wall, so that no flesh could conceivably claim a share. ✦ Pulpit's paradox holds at both ends: the instrument must be so slight that the power is unmistakably God's, and yet the instrument itself is of unmatched excellence.

The refiner at the water novel

The verb governing the second sifting is צָרַף (tsâraph, H6884) — to smelt, to fuse, to purge. ✦ Barnes: "the word used for refining metals by separating the dross from the pure ore." ✦ Ellicott: the LXX render it "I will purge them, as gold from dross, and this is the literal sense of the word ( Isaiah 1:25 ; Isaiah 48:10 )." ✦ Cambridge adds Jeremiah 9:7 and Psalm 66:10, "of Jehovah's testing the people." ⚙ In every one of those places the refiner is God and the metal is Israel; and the prophets carry the same verb forward to a coming day — "he is like a refiner's fire … and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver" (Malachi 3:2-3), said of the Lord whom Israel seeks, who shall suddenly come to His temple. ⚙ The Study Bible offers this as a reading, not a proof: what happens at the spring of Harod is a small, early instance of a work Scripture assigns finally to the Messiah — the separating of a people down to what survives the fire, at cost to the bulk of the ore. The three hundred are not better metal; they are what is left when the refiner has finished, and the text pointedly declines to tell us why they are what is left. ⚙ Marked honestly: the identification of Malachi's refiner with the coming Messiah is ancient and widely held, but the step of reading this water-test as a type of that refining is the machine's own, and is marked novel accordingly.
